What killed Raila Odinga?: All You Need To Know About ODM Leader's Death

News of Raila Odinga’s passing has deeply shaken Kenya and beyond.

The former Prime Minister and long-time opposition leader reportedly died on the morning of Wednesday, October 15, 2025, while receiving treatment in India.

According to reports from Mathrubhumi.com, a reputable Indian news outlet, Raila collapsed at around 7:45 a.m. during his regular morning walk at an Ayurvedic hospital where he had been undergoing care.

Doctors rushed him to Devamatha Hospital in Koothattukulam, Kerala, but despite their efforts, they could not revive him.

The hospital later confirmed he suffered a cardiac arrest and was pronounced dead at 9:52 a.m. Indian time.

Hospital officials in India have since preserved the body and notified the Foreigners Regional Registration Office (FRRO) to begin repatriation procedures in coordination with the Kenyan government.

Raila had travelled to India several weeks earlier alongside his daughter, Rosemary Odinga, who was also receiving Ayurvedic treatment at Sreedhareeyam Hospital, the same institution credited with partially restoring her eyesight some years back.

Sources indicate that Raila had been under observation for fatigue and mild respiratory complications.

Back in Kenya, the news of his death spread quickly, sparking emotional reactions across the country.

In Raila’s political strongholds such as Homa Bay, Migori, and Kisumu, residents closed shops and took to the streets, chanting “Jowi!” — a traditional Luo expression of mourning and respect.

Political leaders, friends, and supporters flooded social media with messages of condolence, describing him as a tireless advocate for democracy and justice.

Many remembered his decades of struggle for multiparty democracy, his leadership in the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM), and his influence on Kenya’s modern politics.
