Things Get Worse for DIG Lagat As He Is Caught Up in CHAN Police Allowances Scandal

As he battles a case seeking his removal from office, the Deputy Inspector General of Police Eliud Lagat has once again been caught up in another scandal this time round involving the mismanagement of allowances of police officers who helped manage CHAN matches in various stadiums.

According to official records and narrations from police officers involved in CHAN matches, NPS was to pay daily allowances of KES 3,465 daily to the lowest ranking police constables involved in maintaining order during the matches.

In total, junior officers involved in the matches were to each receive 97K at the end of the tournament. Officers in the rank of PC were to receive KES 7,700 per day totalling to 215K for the 28 days the tonourment was in place.

However, officers have come out and disclosed that a number of them only received a total of 10K for the 28 days.

Others have allegedly not seen a cent of their pay.

Officers who received 10k told members of the press that they were handed the money without signing anywhere.

Others said they were handed the money in the corridors of Vigilance house without any official records.

DIG Lagat has been implicated in the whole ordeal as he is the head of operations in the National Police Service.

The CHAN assignment being a special operation, squarely fell under his office and control.

The key question officers are asking is: Where is our money? The 11M that was budgeted for the exercise.

CHAN Local Organizing Committee ( LOC ) has distanced itself from the case insisting that they wired the money to NPS.

The ministry of Interior has also washed hands off the case clearly stating that the money was wired to NPS. Under DIG Lagat's leadership, where did the money go?
