A wave of grief has engulfed Murang’a County following the death of sixteen family members who perished in a grisly road accident at Kariandusi along the Nakuru-Nairobi highway.
The victims, who hailed from Kahiga, Kangui and Gacharage villages in Kandara Constituency, were travelling together when their journey was tragically cut short.
The devastating news first reached relatives through media broadcasts before official confirmation later came from authorities.
Three family homesteads have since been turned into mourning centres as neighbours, friends and local leaders stream in to console the bereaved.
The loss has been described as one of the most painful tragedies to hit the community in recent years.
Among those who lost their lives were elderly parents, young children and siblings, leaving surviving relatives shattered.
In one homestead, six members of a single household were confirmed dead, while in another, three generations were wiped out in the same crash.
The lone survivor, a young boy, is undergoing treatment in hospital as relatives cling to hope for his recovery.
Scenes of grief have been witnessed across the villages as relatives struggle to come to terms with the scale of the disaster.
Some family members collapsed, while others broke down in uncontrollable tears as the reality of the tragedy sank in.
The emotional toll has been described as unbearable, with the affected families now appealing for psychological support.
Beyond mourning, attention has also shifted to the heavy financial burden of hospital and burial expenses estimated at millions of shillings.
Community members, leaders and well-wishers are being urged to join hands to ease the load as funeral arrangements begin for the fourteen victims whose lives were cut short in the accident.
