Nyamira County is reeling in shock after the mysterious disappearance of a young woman ended in tragedy.
Faith Kemunto, who was preparing to join university this month, was found dead after her boyfriend allegedly confessed to killing her and burying her in a shallow grave.
Police say the suspect, identified as 22-year-old Gideon Makori, was in a relationship with Kemunto when she went missing in June.
On the day she disappeared, the 20-year-old left home nibbling on a mango and never returned.
For weeks, her family searched desperately without answers until a chilling message was received on her sister-in-law’s phone.
The text, believed to have been sent by Makori, revealed where Kemunto had been buried.
Her mother, Grace Nyaitondi, painfully recalled that the message said Faith had been buried in Maosi near the place where soil was being mined next to a tank, and that she decided to let those responsible go.
Kemunto’s father described his daughter as a humble girl who preferred staying at home after school.
He appealed to the government to help them get justice quickly.
The shocking discovery has sparked outrage in Maosi Village, where locals gathered at the scene in disbelief.
Many decried the rising cases of femicide targeting young women, with some recalling other recent killings of students in the region.
Police have since secured a court order to exhume the body for investigations as the hunt for the suspect intensifies.
Kemunto’s death has left her family and community heartbroken, with many questioning how such a bright life was cut short just as her future was beginning.
