Shock and grief have gripped Sega town in Siaya County following the tragic death of two teachers who were electrocuted inside a rental house bathroom.
The victims were identified as Meshack Ongulu, a respected teacher and church leader, and his colleague Modesta Mwakali.
Reports indicate that Modesta was the first to be struck by an electric fault in the bathroom.
Meshack, in an attempt to save her, was also electrocuted, leading to the double tragedy.
Initial reports suggested that Meshack died with his wife.
However, family members dismissed those claims, confirming that his wife is alive.
A relative told TUKO.co.ke that the woman was her in-law and not the one who had died as claimed.
Another cousin also explained that Meshack’s wife was still alive and said the family was confused when they saw reports alleging otherwise.
Neighbors disclosed that Ongulu and Modesta were in a lodging room when the accident occurred, adding that the two shared a close relationship.
The revelation has stirred mixed emotions within the community.
Friends and former students mourned Meshack as a dedicated educator and spiritual leader.
He was known as the Director of Somabase Preparatory Centre and had also served at St. Augustine’s Boys Boarding Butunyi and as a chaplain at Bujumba Boys.
Safety experts warn that faulty wiring and poor bathroom installations remain a silent danger in many homes, urging families to use certified electricians and install ground fault circuit interrupters to prevent similar tragedies.
The double loss has left a community in sorrow while Meshack’s family struggles to come to terms with both grief and controversy surrounding his death.
