Mwangi, known for his outspoken activism, shared that on October 9, while travelling from Nairobi to Malindi, he discovered a spent bullet cartridge hidden inside his carry-on bag.
According to him, the discovery was made shortly after landing, when he opened his bag and found the casing among his clothes.
He said he had personally packed the bag before leaving home and passed through two security checks at JKIA without any problem.
However, his bag was briefly taken from him by airport staff just before boarding, and when it was returned, he noticed a luggage slip had been attached.
Mwangi suspects the bullet shell was planted in his bag during that brief moment.
“This was not a coincidence. It was a direct threat to my life,” he said in a statement shared on Sunday, October 12.
The activist explained that he had considered filing a police report but his lawyers advised against it, fearing that it could be used against him.
Instead, he documented the evidence with photos and videos before handing it over to a human rights organisation for safe record.
He believes this was part of a larger plan to intimidate him and other activists who have been vocal against government actions.
Mwangi said the harassment intensified after his announcement to run for president.
He claimed state agencies were now targeting him using financial, legal, and online intimidation.
“There are ongoing efforts to frustrate me using false criminal charges and tax accusations. I have also been warned that plans are underway to deregister my businesses,” Mwangi added.
He further alleged that the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) was under pressure to question his eligibility for the presidency, claiming intelligence officers were behind a campaign to portray him negatively and weaken his public image.
Despite the threats, Mwangi vowed not to bow to fear.
“If anything happens to me, the government should be held responsible,” he stated firmly.
Police are yet to respond to his claims, and it remains unclear whether any investigations will be launched into the alleged incident.
