Outspoken lawyer Ndegwa Njiru has launched an attack on Kasongo, accusing him of turning the somber farewell ceremonies for the late Baba into political rallies.
In a statement shared on his X (formerly Twitter) account, Njiru claimed that Kasongo’s recent public speeches were not genuine tributes to the departed leader but calculated political maneuvers aimed at winning voter sympathy.
“I have keenly listened to Kasongo’s address at Nyayo Stadium on Friday, his address at Bondo on Sunday, and his Mashujaa Day speech at Kitui on Monday. All that I gather is that Kasongo was never mourning Baba. Kasongo was never eulogizing Baba. Kasongo was addressing voters, not mourners,” Njiru wrote.
The lawyer alleged that instead of consoling the nation and paying tribute to the fallen statesman, Kasongo used the platform to push his personal political agenda. “Kasongo was making a political case for himself. What a con!” he added, ending his post with the word “WANTAM!” — a phrase expressing disapproval and frustration.
Njiru’s remarks come amid growing criticism of politicians who have been accused of using the funeral ceremonies of national figures to advance political interests rather than focusing on unity and reflection.
Meanwhile, Muthoni Njakwe also weighed in on national politics in a separate post, cautioning against attempts to sow division. She accused Mutahi Kahiga of being “used badly” to create rifts between communities, particularly those from the central and lake regions.
“You don’t need a degree in rocket science to know that was bound to happen,” Njakwe wrote, adding that Kahiga should be “very ashamed.”
The two statements highlight the heightened political tensions even during national mourning, as leaders continue to trade accusations over motives and loyalties.
