Tension erupted at Nabongo Mumia Cultural Centre in Matungu, Kakamega County, after a meeting between Trans Nzoia Governor George Natembeya and local elders was disrupted by a group of angry youths.
The event, which was meant to be a peaceful cultural engagement, turned chaotic as the youths began pelting stones, forcing some attendees to run for safety.
Governor Natembeya had travelled to Matungu to meet King Nabongo II and members of the Wanga community to seek blessings and discuss matters of regional unity.
However, the gathering was interrupted shortly after his arrival when a section of youths attempted to block his entry into the venue.
According to eyewitnesses, the rowdy youths appeared agitated and accused the governor of using the visit for political purposes.
The situation quickly escalated as they began shouting and throwing stones at the crowd.
Security officers and local leaders struggled to calm the situation, but the confrontation spread across the compound, leading to confusion and panic.
Several chairs and tents were destroyed during the incident, and some guests were seen fleeing the area for safety.
Police officers stationed nearby intervened to restore order, dispersing the youth before the meeting could continue.
