Miguna Miguna Reacts to Raila Odinga's Death

NAIROBI, Kenya — Canada-based lawyer and political activist Miguna Miguna has joined Kenyans in mourning the death of former Prime Minister Raila Amolo Odinga, who passed away early Wednesday, October 15, 2025, while in India for treatment.

According to reports from local and international media, Raila collapsed during his usual morning walk within the compound of an Ayurvedic treatment centre in Koothattukulam, Kerala State, India.

Efforts by medics to resuscitate him were unsuccessful, and he was pronounced dead shortly after arrival at a nearby private hospital.

Odinga had been in India for about five days, where he was undergoing specialized medical care. His daughter, Rosemary Odinga, and his personal doctor were reportedly by his side when the incident occurred.

The news of his death has sent shockwaves across Kenya, with citizens, political leaders, and global figures expressing sorrow and admiration for the man many fondly called Baba or Jakom.

Among those who shared their condolences was Miguna Miguna, who despite years of political differences with the ODM leader, offered a heartfelt message to the Odinga family.

“I have just received the sad news. My sincere condolences to the family of Raila Odinga. Rest in peace, Jakom,” Miguna wrote on his social media page.

The message took many by surprise. Miguna and Raila have had a long, complicated history, especially after the 2018 Handshake between Raila and former President Uhuru Kenyatta—a move Miguna often criticized as betrayal.

His fallout with the government led to his deportation from Kenya after he participated in Raila’s symbolic swearing-in as the “People’s President” in 2018.

However, Miguna’s decision to set aside past grievances in this moment of grief has been viewed by many Kenyans as a rare gesture of forgiveness and respect.

Raila’s passing marks the end of an era for a leader who shaped Kenya’s democratic journey for more than four decades.
