Raila Odinga’s daughter, Winnie Odinga, has hinted at her willingness to work with President William Ruto’s administration, in what many interpreted as a symbolic continuation of her late father’s legacy.
Speaking during the funeral service of the former Prime Minister in Bondo, Siaya County, Winnie expressed deep gratitude to President Ruto for standing with the Odinga family during their time of mourning.
“Your Excellency, our people appreciate your honouring my father. Thank you for standing with us,” she said.
Adding with a smile, “You should also know, in case you are wondering, I am ready to return home.
Her words drew applause from mourners, some viewing the statement as a veiled expression of her readiness to collaborate with the government.
Winnie, who currently serves as a Member of the East African Legislative Assembly (EALA) under the ODM Party, also lauded members of her late father’s staff for their dedication during his final days.
During the same ceremony, Raila’s sister Ruth Odinga delivered an emotional tribute, recalling the family’s difficult experiences during the late leader’s detention under former President Daniel arap Moi’s regime.
“Raila became a refugee in Norway, staying with me. He was a strong man. Mama Ida suffered because she spent many years without her husband,” Ruth said.
She also disclosed her brother’s final message to her before his passing — a passionate call for unity within the ODM Party.
“He told me ODM must remain united and strong. The party belongs to all of us, not a few people who think they own it,” Ruth revealed.
The funeral, attended by top government officials and dignitaries, marked the final farewell to the veteran opposition leader whose influence defined Kenya’s political landscape for decades.
