Lawyer and Political commentator Wahome Thuku has addressed the notable absence of former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua from the state funeral of the late former Prime Minister Raila Odinga. His remarks coincide with the one-year anniversary of Gachagua’s impeachment from office.
Thuku, a close ally of Gachagua, described the impeachment as a humiliating experience that was supported by powerful interests in the state.
He suggested that instead of diminishing Gachagua’s political relevance, the move unexpectedly increased his profile, keeping him in public discussion despite efforts to sideline him.
According to Thuku, expecting Gachagua to attend the funeral at Nyayo Stadium was unrealistic given the past treatment he received. He noted that Gachagua, like himself, avoids actions that feel hypocritical.
Thuku stressed that the former deputy president’s decision not to attend in person should be understood in the context of dignity and principle rather than disregard for the late leader.
Thuku also highlighted the intentions of political institutions such as the National Assembly and Senate. He implied that they had hoped Gachagua would disappear from the political scene following his impeachment.
However, he argued that the expectation that he would be forgotten in a few months was misplaced, as Gachagua continues to be a significant and discussed figure in Kenyan politics.
Gachagua’s absence was particularly noticeable because many other opposition leaders attended the funeral.
The two politicians had a history of strong disagreements, which became more pronounced during and after the 2022 general elections.
While Gachagua sent a message of condolence acknowledging Raila Odinga’s democratic legacy, he chose to remain in his rural home, Wamumyoro in Nyeri, rather than attend the public ceremony.
