Former Trade and Industrialisation Cabinet Secretary Moses Kuria has cast doubt on the strength of the emerging coalition between former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua and Wiper leader Kalonzo Musyoka.
Speaking on Sunday, October 5, Kuria suggested that the alliance—dubbed the “United Opposition”—was moving too early in its quest to unseat President William Ruto in 2027.
Kuria argued that political history in Kenya shows no successful coalition has ever been formed more than six months before a general election.
According to him, timing and strategic calculations remain vital in determining electoral success.
“Historical fact—no winning coalition has ever been formed more than six months before a General Election,” Kuria said in a social media post. “Some things I watch and just wonder. Is it a coalition or a Lunatic Express? Hesabu ni muhimu.”
His remarks appeared to target the opposition’s early moves to consolidate power, describing them as premature and potentially self-defeating.
The former CS’s statement ignited debate among Kenyans online. Some agreed with his perspective, saying political momentum often builds closer to the election. Others dismissed his view as outdated and overly conservative.
One user argued that “history can always be rewritten,” while another said Kuria was “clinging to old political formulas that no longer apply.”
Supporters of the United Opposition, however, maintained that early planning demonstrates seriousness and unity of purpose.
