Political commentator Peter Mwangi has dismissed claims that former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua is behind the recent rumours about Azimio leader Raila Odinga’s alleged illness, suggesting instead that Wiper Party leader Kalonzo Musyoka is the mastermind.
Speaking on Sunday, Mwangi argued that Gachagua lacked the political wit to orchestrate such a narrative, insisting that the rumour required a more calculated strategist.
“It’s Kalonzo who is behind the rumours claiming that Baba is unwell and was flown abroad for treatment. Such narratives are far beyond Gachagua’s level of thinking,” Mwangi stated.
His remarks come amid heated political exchanges following widespread reports that Raila had travelled abroad for medical reasons claims that the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) has since strongly denied.
The party clarified that Raila had indeed left the country but not for treatment, accusing opposition rivals of spreading misinformation for political mileage.
Mwangi further accused Kalonzo of using Raila’s absence to create uncertainty within Azimio la Umoja, arguing that such tactics were aimed at positioning himself as Raila’s potential successor.
“Kalonzo is desperate for attention and wants to use Raila’s name to remain politically relevant,” Mwangi added.
The ODM leadership has since assured supporters that Raila is in good health and will soon return to the country.
The controversy has sparked renewed tension within the opposition, with leaders trading accusations over loyalty and succession politics.
