Man Dies In Custody After Allegedly Swallowing Bhang

The news of Njuguna’s death spread quickly, sparking protests in the area. Angry residents stormed the local police post, accusing officers of using excessive force. The crowd was later dispersed by reinforcement teams to prevent damage to property.

Local authorities have denied claims of police brutality. Gatundu South Deputy County Commissioner Rose Chege stated that Njuguna died after choking on rolls of bhang that he allegedly tried to swallow to hide evidence.

“A postmortem showed he had wrapped bhang in nylon paper and swallowed it. The package blocked his airway, causing his death,” she explained.

Chege, however, cautioned officers against using unnecessary force and urged them to respect human rights when handling suspects.

Despite the government’s statement, residents remain doubtful. They believe there’s more to Njuguna’s death than what has been reported.

“Even if he had drugs, did he deserve to die? This is not justice,” one villager remarked.

A wave of anger has swept through Kiganjo village in Gatundu South following the shocking death of 30-year-old Paul Njuguna, who died shortly after being taken into police custody.

Residents say Njuguna was arrested by officers on suspicion of possessing bhang, but what happened next has left the entire community demanding answers.

According to locals, the arrest turned violent. Witnesses claim Njuguna was beaten and dragged through the market by police officers before being taken to the station. Many traders stopped what they were doing as the incident unfolded in public.

“They were not arresting him; they were punishing him,” said James Karanja, a local resident.

“He couldn’t even walk. We begged them to stop, but they didn’t listen.”

Another witness, Patrick Njoroge, described the scene as humiliating and brutal.

“They took him around the market while beating him. When we went to the station later, we were told he was already dead,” he said.
