Speaking on X, Kuria said many leaders treat Raila as if he is the solution to every problem. He compared this tendency to the traditional belief that the mwarubaini tree (neem) can cure every disease.
“My good friend Baba is being misused. Some people act as if once you have him, you have solved everything. Baba is not mwarubaini. The country has changed, and this mindset will soon collapse,” Kuria said.
Kuria went further to criticize some governors, accusing them of hiding behind Raila whenever they are questioned by oversight institutions. He pointed out that Raila recently said Senators should not summon governors, a statement that governors have quickly used to defend themselves.
“Governors should not use Raila’s views to escape accountability. Institutions like the Senate have clear mandates. Leaders must respect them instead of relying on political shields,” Kuria added.
The former CS’s warning came shortly after Raila addressed a joint ODM–UDA meeting, where he argued that Members of County Assemblies (MCAs) should be the ones to oversee governors, not Senators.
Raila explained that senators often demand explanations on matters such as road construction, which, according to him, are responsibilities of the national government.
“Oversight of governors should rest with MCAs. Senators should not waste governors’ time with endless summons,” Raila said.
Raila’s comments divided opinion across the political class. His supporters argued that governors would work more efficiently if left to answer only to MCAs.
