President William Ruto and his partner Raila Odinga, now pulling in the same political direction, sources has alleged that smaller political parties faces a bleak future after the duo made unexpected pact to form a broadbased government.
Reports from Taifa Leo has established that ambitious politicians have been left reorganizing themselves, uncertain of the future of the Ruto–Raila political pact.
This was evident when the duo co-chaired a joint meeting of Kenya Kwanza and ODM legislators, signaling the possibility that their cooperation could last until the 2027 general election.
Analysts now say that some of President Ruto’s and Mr. Odinga’s allies may lose out for the benefit of the two leaders as the election approaches.
Even before the cooperation pact was signed, former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua was the first casualty of this closeness, having been ousted, and was replaced with Prof Kithure Kindiki, who was sworn in on November 1 at KICC, Nairobi.
However, with signs emerging that President Ruto and Mr. Odinga may form a formal coalition, Prof. Kindiki’s position could be at risk in what has been described as political horse-trading for 2027.
“As a major political party, aside from the presidency, the top seat we shall demand is that of deputy president. We shall also demand half of the cabinet slots, principal secretaries, ambassadors, and heads of state agencies,” Nyando MP Mr. Okello told Taifa Leo.
However, Mr. Odinga has denied claims that ODM is eyeing the Deputy President’s seat, while praising Prof. Kindiki’s leadership style.
Other leaders at risk of losing their positions due to the “marriage” between President Ruto and Odinga include Prime Cabinet Secretary Musalia Mudavadi and Speakers Moses Wetang’ula (National Assembly) and Amason Kingi (Senate).
Nevertheless, in Mr. Odinga’s camp, those who may lose out are leaders opposed to the inclusive government, led by Secretary-General Edwin Sifuna.
