The nomination, set for Wednesday, September 24, 2025, has triggered heated campaigns as top leaders openly back their preferred candidates.
Governor Wanga is fronting Boyd Were, the son of former Kasipul MP Ong’ondo Were, while Deputy Governor Magwanga has thrown his weight behind Newton Ogada.
Their differences were laid bare after Magwanga dismissed Boyd’s candidacy as a political project meant to benefit powerful figures.
He urged voters to reject dynastic politics, pointing to other constituencies where relatives of former MPs were not granted direct tickets.
The contest has attracted several other aspirants, including Engineer Tom Okoko, Balwin Oluoch, Okindo Majiwa, Dr Adel Ottoman, and former Ramogi FM journalist George Otieno ‘Ajoh Mbuta.
However, some aspirants have withdrawn, citing alleged manipulation by senior ODM figures. Discontent has also pushed others like Philip Aroko and Robert Riaga to vie as independents, while Isaac Abok has joined the Kenya Moja Movement.
UPA and parties like KANU and Wiper have also fielded candidates.
Ogada is banking on his development record, including the construction of over 6,000 houses for vulnerable families, a hospital, and an orphanage supporting over 200 children.
Boyd, on the other hand, is riding on his father’s legacy, clan networks, and Governor Wanga’s backing.
With Wanga and Magwanga split, ODM faces a fierce internal test in Kasipul, making the race a high-stakes two-horse battle.
