Karua Demands Accountability After Fatal Anti-Ebola Facility Protests in Laikipia

People’s Liberation Party leader Martha Karua has called for a thorough investigation into deaths linked to ongoing protests against a proposed Ebola quarantine facility in Nanyuki, insisting that Kenyans deserve answers over the use of force during demonstrations.

In a statement issued on June 10, 2026, Karua expressed concern over reports that at least three people have died during protests opposing the planned facility. 

She questioned the government's handling of the matter and urged authorities to engage the public transparently on issues surrounding the project.

Karua said many young Kenyans are already struggling with unemployment, the rising cost of living, and economic uncertainty. 

According to her, residents should not be forced to confront additional fears about a potentially dangerous disease being brought into their communities without adequate public participation and information.

The opposition leader extended her condolences to families who lost loved ones during the demonstrations, arguing that no Kenyan should lose their life while seeking clarification on matters affecting public health and community safety. 

She emphasized that citizens have a constitutional right to ask questions and hold leaders accountable without facing violence.

Her remarks came amid heightened tensions in Laikipia County, where protests have continued over plans to establish a quarantine centre reportedly intended to accommodate United States citizens exposed to Ebola. 

The proposal has generated controversy, with critics questioning its safety implications and the level of public consultation undertaken before its announcement.

Reports from the area indicate that clashes erupted when police attempted to disperse demonstrators who had occupied key roads and disrupted transport services. 

Witnesses said security officers used anti-riot measures, including tear gas and water cannons, before the situation escalated further.

Civil society organizations claimed that one protester was fatally shot during the confrontation, bringing the reported death toll connected to the demonstrations to three. 

The incident has intensified calls for an independent inquiry into the circumstances surrounding the deaths and the conduct of security agencies during crowd-control operations.

Businesses in parts of Nanyuki were affected as traders temporarily closed premises amid fears of further unrest. Motorists also experienced delays after several roads became inaccessible during the demonstrations.
