Fresh cracks are beginning to emerge inside the opposition camp as leaders struggle to agree on who should face President William Ruto in the next general election. What was once presented as a united front is now slowly turning into a battle of influence, strategy, and political survival.
The latest signs of tension came after allies of Kalonzo Musyoka reportedly questioned the growing influence of former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua within the opposition movement.
“We know Ruto wishes that Gachagua run,” an ally of Kalonzo reportedly said, suggesting that some opposition leaders believe Gachagua would be easier for Ruto to defeat in a presidential contest.
Behind the scenes, Gachagua’s camp is said to be pushing hard to position him as the only leader capable of weakening Ruto’s support in the Mt Kenya region.
His allies argue that no other opposition figure has the numbers or political connection to challenge the president where it matters most.
However, supporters of Kalonzo and other senior opposition leaders are not convinced. They fear that allowing Gachagua to dominate the coalition could divide supporters and revive old political rivalries that have previously weakened opposition alliances before elections.
The debate is now threatening to reopen wounds that have destroyed major coalitions in the past. Questions over who should lead, who should deputize, and which regions deserve greater influence are once again taking center stage.
Even as opposition leaders continue appearing together in public rallies, insiders say intense negotiations are ongoing behind closed doors.
The battle may still be quiet for now, but it is becoming clear that the race to challenge Ruto has already begun long before the official campaign season starts.
The developments have sparked heated reactions online, with many Kenyans discussing the issue on Facebook and other social media platforms.
