What Was Meant to Be a Peaceful Burial Turns Dramatic as Kin Clash With Chief Over Dowry Balance of One Cow

Drama unfolded in Rumphi District, Malawi, after relatives of an elderly woman stopped her burial and carried away her coffin following a dispute over unpaid dowry.

The deceased, identified as Gogo Nyahara, had been married for more than 50 years. However, members of her family insisted that part of the bride price had never been completed, claiming that one cow was still outstanding.

According to their customs, they argued, a woman cannot be buried in her husband’s village until dowry obligations are fully settled.

The incident happened in Mhuju Village under Traditional Authority Mwahenga, where mourners had gathered for the burial.

Witnesses said tension began when local leaders ruled that the burial should proceed in the husband’s village despite the disagreement between the two families.

Relatives of the deceased opposed the decision, saying tradition had to be respected. One family member was heard insisting that Nyahara would instead be buried in Junju, Livingstonia, unless the remaining dowry was paid.

Attempts to resolve the dispute reportedly failed, and the situation escalated when the local chief ordered that burial preparations continue, citing the late hour and the need to conclude the ceremony.CONTINUE READING.......
