Dr Peter Mbae, a key ally of former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, has issued a stern warning to President William Ruto, saying he will “feel the political consequences” of impeaching Gachagua.
Speaking on K24 TV’s morning press review, Mbae accused President Ruto of abusing the Constitution that once protected him as Deputy President.
“Next time, do not play with a constitution that protected you while you were the DP,” he said.
Mbae further claimed that through Parliament, the President has attempted to capture both the Judiciary and the Executive.
“This will be a good lesson on how not to behave,” he added.
His remarks come as Gachagua’s impeachment case takes a dramatic turn at the Milimani High Court.
In what newspapers have termed a “U-turn”, Gachagua has dropped his demand for reinstatement as Deputy President.
His legal team, led by Senior Counsel Paul Muite, has amended the petition to instead seek a court declaration that the October 2024 impeachment was unconstitutional and to demand substantial compensation and benefits for what they describe as an unlawful removal.
The case, which was before a three-judge bench, has now been adjourned to May 7, 2026.
The statements by Mbae underscore the deepening battle for the political soul of the Mt Kenya region.
Once a solid bloc that propelled Ruto to power in 2022, Mt Kenya remains deeply divided following Gachagua’s impeachment.
President Ruto has intensified development tours and direct engagement in the region, insisting he will not “kneel” to any political kingpin.
Meanwhile, Gachagua and his allies in the Democracy for Citizens Party (DCP) continue to mobilise strongly, framing the impeachment as an attack on the region.
With the 2027 General Election drawing closer, the fierce contest for Mt Kenya loyalty is expected to shape the country’s political future.
