‘Dead Man Walking’? President Ruto’s Advisor Warns Sifuna

Makau Mutua has issued a strong warning to Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna, describing the ODM Secretary-General as “a dead man walking” amid escalating tensions within the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM).

Speaking on April 3, Mutua—who serves as an advisor to President William Ruto—suggested that Sifuna’s position within the party is increasingly untenable.

His remarks come at a time when ODM is grappling with internal realignments and a leadership transition following the death of longtime party leader Raila Odinga.

According to Mutua, shifting power dynamics within the party have left Sifuna politically exposed, with little room to maintain his influence.

He implied that the party’s leadership structure is steadily consolidating against him, raising doubts about his ability to retain the Secretary-General position.

Sifuna has recently been associated with the Linda Mwananchi faction, a movement that has placed him at odds with the current ODM leadership under Oburu Oginga.

This internal divide has intensified speculation about a possible fallout, with Mutua’s remarks further fueling claims that Sifuna could be sidelined.

By referring to him as embattled, Mutua painted a picture of a leader facing growing isolation within his own party.

His comments suggest that elements within ODM view Sifuna’s defiance as unsustainable, predicting that he may eventually lose his foothold in the party’s hierarchy.

However, Sifuna’s influence at the grassroots level could complicate efforts to push him out. His populist approach and appeal among sections of the public may continue to pose a challenge to party unity, particularly as ODM prepares for the 2027 general elections.

Mutua’s statement also highlights how ODM’s internal struggles are attracting attention from figures outside the party, including those aligned with the current administration.

This suggests that the stakes extend beyond ODM itself, with broader implications for Kenya’s political landscape.
