“I Can't Serve Under You Any More” Magwanga Explains Why He Resigned as Homa Bay Deputy Governor

Homa Bay County Deputy Governor Oyugi Magwanga has resigned from his position, citing an irreparably broken working relationship with Governor Gladys Wanga.

Magwanga announced his resignation on Thursday, February 26, 2026, stating that he could no longer effectively discharge his constitutional mandate due to what he described as sustained obstruction and sidelining within the county administration.

In his statement, the outgoing deputy governor said remaining in office under the prevailing circumstances would be dishonourable, especially while drawing a public salary without being allowed to serve residents effectively.

According to Magwanga, his office had been rendered non operational for months. He claimed that since December 2025, he had been denied access to his official office after its locks were allegedly changed without notice. He further alleged that logistical support, including access to an official vehicle, had been withdrawn.

He maintained that these actions significantly limited his ability to execute his duties as provided for under the Constitution and county government structures.

The resignation marks the culmination of months of public tension between Magwanga and Governor Wanga. Their political fallout became more visible following the November 2025 Kasipul parliamentary by election, where the two leaders supported different candidates.

After the by election, Governor Wanga made changes within her administration, including reassignments that affected Magwanga’s executive roles. The deputy governor later moved to court, challenging what he termed as attempts to sideline him from county operations.

Magwanga and Wanga were elected together in 2022 under the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) party after pre election negotiations within the party leadership. At the time, Magwanga had shelved his gubernatorial ambitions to run as Wanga’s deputy.

However, political differences have since emerged, with Magwanga recently declaring interest in contesting for the Homa Bay gubernatorial seat in the 2027 General Election.

In his resignation remarks, Magwanga said he leaves office with a clear conscience and remains committed to serving the people of Homa Bay County in other capacities.

His resignation now leaves the deputy governor’s position vacant, setting the stage for political realignments in the county as leaders begin positioning themselves ahead of the next election cycle.

As of the time of publication, Governor Wanga had not publicly issued a detailed response regarding the resignation.

The development is expected to reshape political dynamics in Homa Bay County in the coming months.
