Uhuru Addresses Directing Gachagua to Organise Major Mt Kenya Meeting

Former President Uhuru Kenyatta has firmly denied claims circulating on social media alleging that he instructed Democracy for Citizens Party (DCP) leader Rigathi Gachagua to organise a major political meeting bringing together leaders from the Mt Kenya region.

In a statement released on Thursday, January 29, Uhuru described the claims as false, misleading, and deliberately crafted to misinform the public.

He cautioned Kenyans against spreading unverified information falsely attributed to him, particularly content shared widely on social media platforms.

The statement was issued by Uhuru’s Secretary of Communication, Kanze Dena Mararo, who emphasised that the former President has not issued any directive to Gachagua or any other political actor regarding Mt Kenya political mobilisation.

“The Office of the 4th President, Uhuru Kenyatta, has observed with concern the circulation of false and misleading content on various social media platforms,” the statement read.

“These claims are unauthorised and do not represent the views, intentions, or position of His Excellency Uhuru Kenyatta.”

The clarification follows viral posts suggesting that Uhuru had quietly instructed Gachagua to begin organising his political team ahead of a high-level meeting aimed at uniting leaders from the vote-rich Mt Kenya region.

The alleged meeting was said to be focused on charting a common political direction ahead of the 2027 General Election.

Uhuru’s office categorically denied any involvement in such plans, stressing that the former Head of State has not taken part in any behind-the-scenes political coordination with Gachagua or his allies.

The statement further underscored that any official communication from Uhuru would only be issued through verified platforms associated with the Office of the 4th President or through official Jubilee Party channels.

Members of the public were urged to exercise caution and verify information before sharing it online.

“We urge all citizens to remain vigilant, verify information from credible sources, and avoid amplifying falsehoods that undermine public trust,” the statement added.

“The dignity of the Office of the 4th President of the Republic of Kenya must be respected.”

In addition to the claims linking him to Gachagua, Uhuru also distanced himself from another viral message dated January 26, which alleged that he was unwell and deeply troubled by the country’s political direction.

The post further claimed that Uhuru was distressed by reports of police excesses, including children allegedly being teargassed during a church service.

Uhuru’s office dismissed the message as fabricated, clarifying that it did not originate from him or any authorised representative.

No details were provided regarding his health, reinforcing the position that the claims were entirely unfounded.

The denials come at a time when politics in the Mt Kenya region remain fluid and highly contested.

Gachagua, who has positioned himself as a central figure in the region’s political future, has been calling for unity among Mt Kenya leaders and voters under his leadership.

However, Uhuru has largely kept his distance from Gachagua’s political activities. The former President has openly declared that his Jubilee Party will back former Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang’i as its preferred presidential candidate in the 2027 elections, signaling a clear political divergence.

Analysts note that attempts to link Uhuru to Gachagua’s mobilisation efforts may be driven by the symbolic influence Uhuru still holds in Mt Kenya politics.

As a former President and long-time regional power broker, any perceived endorsement from Uhuru could significantly shape political alignments in the region.

Meanwhile, Jubilee Party has been undergoing internal reorganisation as it positions itself for the next election cycle.

Last week, the party announced a series of leadership changes aimed at strengthening its structures nationwide.

Jeremiah Kioni was named Deputy Party Leader, while former Narok North MP Richard Ole Kenta was appointed the new Secretary General, replacing Kioni.

Other appointments included Zack Kinuthia as Deputy Secretary General, Yassin Noor Haji as National Organising Secretary, and Vincent Mogaka Kimoki as National Chairperson.

Additional roles were filled by Dan Mwangi as Executive Director, Kiembi Gitura as Director of Elections, Peter Kados as Chairperson of the MCA Caucus, and Saitoti Torome as Jubilee Foundation Public Policy Director.

The reshuffle signals Jubilee’s intent to remain a key player in national politics, even as new political formations emerge and alliances shift ahead of 2027.
