UDA to Launch Leadership School to Lead for Generations

President William Ruto’s United Democratic Alliance (UDA) is taking bold steps to reshape Kenya’s political culture by establishing a leadership school inspired by the long-standing training system of the Communist Party of China (CPC).

The move signals a strategic shift by the ruling party from operating primarily as an election vehicle to building a permanent ideological and organisational institution aimed at grooming leaders for generations.

A high-level UDA delegation led by Secretary General Hassan Omar Hassan is currently in China on a benchmarking mission focused on party discipline, cadre training, and grassroots mobilisation.

The team was officially received at Xiaoshan International Airport in Hangzhou by Lu Qingmin, the Deputy Principal of the Zhejiang Provincial Party School, one of the CPC’s most influential training institutions.

The delegation includes Senator Danson Mungatana, Women’s Representative Cecilia Ngetit, Senior Adviser Prof. Edward Kisiangani, UDA Executive Director Nicodemus Bore, and senior members of the party secretariat.

According to UDA officials, the planned party school is already at an advanced stage of development, with the China visit intended to help refine its structure and curriculum.

The party is keen to borrow best practices from political institutions that have demonstrated longevity, discipline, and internal coherence.

“Our focus is not ideology but organisation,” UDA officials have emphasised, noting that the goal is to strengthen leadership training, policy understanding, and internal discipline within the framework of Kenya’s democratic, multi-party Constitution.

President Ruto’s allies say the initiative reflects his broader vision of institutionalising political leadership rather than relying on personalities or short-term alliances.

Once operational, the UDA Party School is expected to train elected leaders, aspiring politicians, party officials, and grassroots organisers across the country.

From Hustler Movement to Permanent Institution

UDA’s journey to power has been rapid. Originally founded as the Party of Action in February 2012 by Hillary Yegon, the outfit underwent several transformations, later becoming the Party of Development and Reforms in 2017 before rebranding as the United Democratic Alliance in December 2020.

Under the “hustler nation” banner, UDA rose quickly to dominate national politics, becoming the anchor party of the Kenya Kwanza Alliance and delivering William Ruto the presidency in the 2022 General Election, alongside a strong parliamentary presence.

However, party insiders acknowledge that Kenyan political parties have historically struggled with weak internal structures, often dissolving or fragmenting after elections. The leadership school is therefore seen as an attempt to break that cycle.

As part of strengthening grassroots structures, President Ruto has in recent weeks intensified engagement with party officials nationwide.

In January 2026, he hosted more than 17,000 polling centre officials in Nyeri in a move aimed at consolidating UDA’s local networks ahead of the 2027 elections.

Why China?

The Communist Party of China is renowned for its highly structured training system built around “democratic centralism,” a model that combines internal consultation with strict hierarchical discipline.

The party operates through a vast pyramid extending from the national leadership to villages, schools, and workplaces, with over 100 million members.

Its party schools play a central role in training cadres, enforcing loyalty, and ensuring continuity in governance.

UDA officials are particularly interested in how the CPC recruits members, maintains ideological discipline, and sustains organisational unity across a large and diverse population.
