Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has shaken up the political scene after announcing that the DCP Party and the wider Mt Kenya region will throw their support behind ODM Secretary General Edwin Sifuna and Embakasi East MP Babu Owino.
The unexpected endorsement has triggered a wave of reactions across the country, with many calling it one of the most surprising political shifts in recent memory.
Gachagua, who has recently re-emerged with a renewed political strategy, said the region must embrace “forward thinking leadership” that speaks to the aspirations of the youth and the future of the country.
He praised Sifuna and Babu as leaders who have shown consistency, courage, and a strong connection with young voters, making them key voices in shaping Kenya’s next political phase.
The former DP emphasized that Mt Kenya cannot remain isolated in old political patterns. Instead, he urged the region to build alliances based on ability and vision rather than tribe or party loyalty.
This, he said, is the only way to secure national unity and stable leadership going forward.
His announcement has sparked widespread debate. Supporters commend him for taking a bold and inclusive approach, while critics accuse him of political gymnastics meant to revive his influence.
Analysts suggest the move could signal a broader realignment ahead of the next election cycle, with Mt Kenya positioning itself as a kingmaker.
