Fred Gumo Reveals Tiriki Elders's Torch Has Started Working, Says Climax Bus Caught Fire in Naivasha

Former politician Fred Gumo has sparked fresh controversy following remarks linking a reported fire incident involving a Climax bus to cultural rituals associated with the death of former Lugari MP Cyrus Jirongo.

Speaking during Jirongo’s burial ceremony, Gumo claimed that the symbolic torch associated with Tiriki elders had “started working,” alleging that the passenger bus involved in the fatal crash that killed Jirongo had caught fire while parked at the Naivasha Police Station.

“Torchi ya wazee Watiriki imeanza kufanya kazi. Ile basi wanawekelea imeua Jirongo imewaka mataa yenyewe pale Naivasha Police Station mpaka polisi wakatoroka,” Gumo said, drawing murmurs from mourners and onlookers.

According to Gumo, the incident was proof that those responsible for Jirongo’s death would eventually be exposed.

He further suggested that justice would be served gradually, insisting that no wrongdoing would go unanswered.

“Hawa watu watakwisha wenyewe polepole,” he added.

However, authorities have not confirmed any such fire incident involving the Climax bus at the Naivasha Police Station.

The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) has consistently maintained that Jirongo’s death was the result of a road traffic accident and has ruled out foul play following interviews with more than 20 witnesses.

Investigators have recommended a public inquest to address lingering public concerns, especially amid persistent claims and cultural interpretations surrounding the former legislator’s death.

Gumo’s remarks come amid heightened emotions in Western Kenya, where some leaders and elders have called for the observance of Tiriki cultural rites, including symbolic burial practices, arguing they could help uncover hidden truths.

Police officials have urged the public to remain calm and avoid speculation, stressing that investigations should be guided by evidence and forensic findings rather than beliefs or political statements.

As debate continues, Jirongo’s death remains a subject of national discussion, blending grief, culture, and controversy as Kenyans await the outcome of the proposed public inquest.
