Former Interior Cabinet Secretary Dr. Fred Matiang’i has moved to calm rising tension after a wave of rogue bloggers linked to Mt. Kenya politics created fresh hostility in the opposition space.
He reached out to Jubilee Party Deputy Organizing Secretary Pauline Njoroge and urged her to expose people who pretend to support him while attacking other leaders in the coalition.
Njoroge said the call came after she posted about bloggers who praise Matiang’i but insult Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua and other allies in the same breath.
Matiang’i told her he has not hired those online voices and said they are likely pushing a different political mission meant to divide the opposition camp as it prepares for the 2027 race.
He reminded her of a recent rally where he grabbed a microphone from an MCA who tried to insult another leader simply because they held a separate position.
He repeated that he does not entertain abusive politics and said no person should use his name to justify harassment of colleagues who are working for the unity of the United Opposition group.
Njoroge asked him if she could make their conversation public and he allowed it because he believes the trend must stop before it causes deeper rifts.
She later praised him for speaking with honesty as pressure builds in Mt. Kenya where rival leaders are struggling to control regional influence ahead of coming elections.
Rising tension follows recent by-elections in Kisii and Nyamira where Matiang’i staged a strong comeback.
Njoroge praised his push against attempts by the ruling United Democratic Alliance to influence results.
She said his team fought through hostile crowds and managed to run a solid campaign in Ekerenyo ward despite hecklers who disrupted rallies.
Online spaces however remain explosive. Analysts point to a growing struggle between former President Uhuru Kenyatta and Gachagua as both try to command bloggers who shape political stories in the region.
Some influencers like Wahome Thuku have been mentioned though recent checks show he has not directly attacked Matiang’i.
Another figure known as Councilor Njohi appears active on Facebook though his posts are harder to track across platforms.
Despite this murky digital battle, Matiang’i maintains he wants a calm front.
He warned that rogue bloggers risk weakening the opposition at a critical moment when unity is more important than personal pride or loud online theatrics.
