Fear Erupts About Lissu's Safety in Jail After What Prison Guards Did on Sunday

Tanzania’s main opposition party, CHADEMA, has raised alarm over how the government is now handling its detained Chairman, Tundu Lissu.

This comes amid reports that authorities are holding Lissu completely out of public view, with even his closest allies and senior party officials being blocked from accessing him in prison.

On Sunday, Party Secretary General John Mnyika said he was turned away by guards at Ukonga Prison when he attempted to visit Lissu, and was told the order came from superiors.

The party says such actions violate basic rights and raise questions about Lissu’s safety and the government’s intentions.

CHADEMA’s Vice Chair, John Heche, has strongly condemned the incident, suggesting that the state may be plotting something sinister.

The former Tarime Rural MP argued that Lissu is constitutionally entitled to receive visitors and that denying him this right only strengthens the case for political change in Tanzania.

“That is why this tyrannical regime that does not follow the law or procedures must leave power,” Heche wrote in a post on X.

“The laws exist and it is our right to see our leader. Why do they prevent us from seeing him? What evil thing do they want to do against our leader?”

Lissu, a former Singida East lawmaker, has been held since early this year despite mounting domestic and international pressure demanding his release.

He faces treason charges tied to remarks he made earlier in the year about his party’s plans to ensure the October 29 election doesn't take place.
