Tearful Moment As Ida Odinga Returns To Raila’s Gravesite To Perform Luo Widow Rituals In Bondo

Ida Odinga, the widow of the late former Prime Minister Raila Odinga, made an emotional visit to her husband’s final resting place early Monday morning.

The somber moment unfolded at the family’s Opoda Farm in Bondo, just a day after the iconic opposition leader was laid to rest in a private ceremony attended by close family, dignitaries, and political allies.

Dressed modestly and escorted by a few family members and security personnel, Ida was seen standing quietly at Raila’s grave for several minutes, her head bowed in deep reflection and prayer.

Witnesses described the atmosphere as calm but heavy with emotion, as she paid her final respects to the man she had stood beside for decades—through political storms, personal trials, and triumphs that shaped Kenya’s history.

Sources close to the family revealed that Ida’s visit was not just a personal moment of mourning but also a significant cultural gesture rooted in Luo traditions.

According to Luo Council of Elders chairman, Ruoth Ogai James Ayaga, the act symbolizes the beginning of a widow’s mourning period, during which she formally bids farewell to her departed spouse while observing specific customs meant to honor his spirit.

“In Luo culture, a widow is expected to visit her husband’s grave soon after burial to pray and reflect.

It marks the beginning of her period of transition and continued connection to her husband’s spirit,” Ayaga explained.

He added that the ritual is often accompanied by blessings and traditional prayers to ensure peace for the departed soul and strength for the grieving family.

Meanwhile, hundreds of mourners continued to stream into Kang’o Ka Jaramogi—Raila’s ancestral home—to pay their respects.

Many came from across the country, carrying flowers, portraits, and symbolic gifts as tributes to the man widely regarded as a champion of democracy and social justice.

Security around the Odinga residence remained tight as the family sought privacy in their time of grief.

Despite this, a few locals managed to stand at a distance, quietly observing the moment and offering prayers for Mama Ida and her family.

For many, Ida Odinga’s visit reflected both resilience and devotion—a public figure performing a deeply personal act that resonated with cultural meaning.

It served as a poignant reminder that beyond the politics and power, the Odinga family remains deeply anchored in the traditions that define their heritage and faith.
