The burial of former Cabinet minister Dalmas Otieno in Rongo, Migori County, took an unexpected turn when Senator Oburu Odinga was unable to complete reading a condolence message from former Prime Minister Raila Odinga.
Oburu, who had been given the responsibility of delivering Raila’s message to mourners, stopped midway citing an eye problem.
As the crowd waited, Migori Governor Ochilo Ayacko stepped forward and finished reading the message on Raila’s behalf.
The tribute highlighted the long political friendship between Raila and the late Dalmas, recalling his contribution to public service and his strong belief in business and development.
Raila’s words emphasized that Dalmas was a firm leader who stood by his principles and worked to uplift both his community and the country.
Governor Ayacko’s intervention allowed mourners to hear Raila’s full message of condolence, which underlined the depth of loss felt by the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) family and the nation at large.
The message described Dalmas as a man who valued both government and private sector cooperation for the benefit of citizens.
Former President Uhuru Kenyatta also reached out to the family through a message delivered by former Nairobi Governor Evans Kidero.
In his statement, Uhuru remembered Dalmas as a calm and wise leader whose voice was respected across political divides.
He noted that Dalmas not only represented Rongo with dedication but also guided many as a mentor.
The burial brought together national and regional leaders who praised Dalmas for his decades of service in politics and governance. His death was described as a great loss to his family, constituency, and the nation.
