“I Was Not Happy with My Brother”: Oburu Oginga Breaks Silence, Blames the Late Raila Over This

Siaya Senator Dr. Oburu Oginga has expressed his shock and disbelief over the burial instructions left behind by his late brother, former Prime Minister Raila Odinga, who directed that he be buried within 72 hours of his death.

Speaking during a family gathering in Bondo on Saturday, Oburu emotionally recalled his initial reaction upon learning of Raila’s wishes. “I said, ‘This our child, will we just bury him after 72 hours?’” he recounted, his voice heavy with emotion.

The senator admitted that, like many Kenyans, he was taken aback by the short burial timeline, saying the family expected more time to allow the nation to mourn a man who had dedicated his life to public service and democracy.

“Raila was not just our brother; he was a national figure. We felt that three days was too soon for Kenyans to come to terms with his passing,” Oburu said.

Despite his reservations, Oburu noted that the family has resolved to honor Raila’s wishes in full, describing him as a man of principle who always preferred simplicity and humility, even in death.

“He never liked extravagance or unnecessary ceremony. We will respect what he wanted because that is who he was — straightforward and modest,” he added.

ODM leaders, including Wycliffe Oparanya and Edwin Sifuna, were also present at the event and praised Raila’s family for upholding his final wishes. They emphasized that the party would continue to champion Raila’s legacy of unity, justice, and democracy.

As preparations continue in Bondo, thousands of mourners are expected to converge at the Odinga family home to pay their final respects. The government has also announced plans to support the family in ensuring a dignified farewell for the late opposition leader.
