Former Makueni Governor Kivutha Kibwana has sparked debate after urging the Kamba community to unite politically if they hope to unseat President William Ruto in the 2027 general elections.
According to a video clip circulating online, in which Kibwana was addressing a community gathering, Kibwana cautioned that relying solely on Wiper Party leader Kalonzo Musyoka would not be enough to challenge Ruto’s political strength.
“Huyu Ruto si mtu hivi hivi, si mtu wa kutoa urais kwa kirahisi,” said Kibwana, emphasizing that defeating Ruto would require strategy, unity, and alliances beyond one region or leader.
His sentiments have since ignited political discussions across the Ukambani region and beyond.
Kibwana argued that while Kalonzo remains a respected figure among the Kamba people, it would take a coalition of leaders working together to mount a serious challenge against Ruto’s Kenya Kwanza administration.
According to him, the era of ethnic or personality-based politics is fading, and communities must rally around common goals and inclusive leadership.
Political analysts believe Kibwana’s comments reflect growing unease within the opposition camp as the 2027 elections draw closer.
With Raila Odinga’s political future uncertain, the spotlight has increasingly turned to Kalonzo Musyoka as a possible flagbearer for the opposition.
However, Kibwana’s statement suggests that even within Ukambani, there are doubts about Kalonzo’s ability to galvanize national support on his own.
Reactions to Kibwana’s message have been mixed. Some praised him for speaking truth to power and urging strategic unity, while others viewed his comments as an attempt to undermine Kalonzo’s influence in the region.
Nonetheless, the former governor’s remarks have once again reignited the conversation on succession politics and the role of regional blocs in shaping Kenya’s 2027 political landscape.
