Kisii Elders Issue Tough Warning to Raila Odinga Over Matiang’i’s Presidential Bid

A group of elders from Kisii County has issued a stern warning to ODM leader Raila Odinga over former Interior Cabinet Secretary Dr. Fred Matiang’i's presidential ambitions.

Speaking on behalf of the elders, former Kisii County Assembly Speaker David Kombo said they would not tolerate any attempts to undermine Matiang’i’s bid for the presidency.

While warning Raila to stop belittling Matiang'i, the elders, who are part of Matiang’i's clan, made it clear that they fully support his plans to contest in the next general election and believe he has what it takes to lead the country.

“Raila is someone we respect, but if he has no intention of supporting one of our own, he should stop talking about Matiang’i,” Kombo firmly stated.

“We will not accept anyone mocking his ambitions," stated the elders.

During Raila’s recent visit to Kisii, he was asked whether he would support Matiang’i's bid for the presidency in 2027. Raila responded that Matiang’i could not win the presidency with votes from the Kisii community alone, a statement that many of Matiang’i’s supporters saw as dismissive.

The elders argued that Matiang’i has a proven track record of strong leadership during his time as a Cabinet Secretary in the government of former President Uhuru Kenyatta.

They touched on his achievements in the Ministries of Education, Interior, and ICT, saying his experience and dedication make him a suitable candidate for the country's top office.

The group also criticized leaders from the Abagusii community who have openly dismissed Matiang’i’s presidential plans in favor of the current administration.

They urged these leaders to campaign for their preferred candidates respectfully without undermining Matiang’i.

“Kenya is a democratic country, and everyone has the right to seek leadership. Let those against Matiang’i's bid do so respectfully,” Kombo added.

The elders warned that any further attempts to belittle Matiang’i would be met with strong resistance from the community, as they remain committed to backing his quest for the presidency.
