A fuel tanker overturned on the Kakamega-Busia highway on Friday after the driver swerved to avoid an oncoming pickup truck.
The incident, which occurred near a busy stretch of the road, caused a major traffic jam but fortunately left no casualties.
Witnesses said the tanker was heading toward Busia when the pickup suddenly appeared from the opposite direction.
To avoid a direct collision, the tanker driver veered off the tarmac, hitting an electricity pole before the vehicle rolled onto its side.
The impact cut off power in nearby trading centers, leaving residents and businesses in darkness.
Police officers quickly arrived at the scene to control traffic and prevent locals from crowding around the vehicle.
They also warned residents against attempting to scoop fuel, a risky behavior that has in the past led to deadly explosions in parts of the country.
Motorists using the highway were forced to wait for hours as officers directed vehicles to alternative routes.
Some travelers expressed frustration at the long delays but acknowledged that safety measures had to come first.
“It is inconveniencing, but we are glad no lives were lost,” said one driver stuck in traffic.
Kenya Power technicians were later deployed to the area to assess the damaged post and begin restoration works.
Officials at the site explained that the tanker would only be towed once the fuel inside was secured to avoid spillage.
The Kakamega-Busia highway is a crucial transport corridor, serving as a main link between western Kenya and the Uganda border.
Heavy trucks, public service vehicles, and private cars frequently use the road, making it prone to traffic congestion whenever accidents occur.
Area police urged drivers to exercise caution, especially when approaching sharp bends and narrow sections.
They also emphasized the need for motorists to remain alert and observe speed limits to minimize accidents on the busy highway.
By late afternoon, traffic had started moving gradually, though long queues remained on both sides.
Authorities confirmed investigations were underway to establish the cause of the near-collision between the tanker and the pickup truck.
