Gachagua, who leads the Democracy for Citizens Party (DCP), said that whoever is chosen as the flagbearer must be the one who can command the most votes to face off with President Ruto.
He dismissed critics on social media urging him to support another candidate, questioning whether their preferred choice could actually deliver votes strong enough to counter Ruto.
He explained that in the central region alone, projections show about 8.4 million votes if every eligible voter registers.
According to him, it would be unwise to sideline someone who can attract such numbers in favor of a candidate with limited political weight.
Gachagua described Ruto as a formidable opponent who requires an equally capable challenger, one with wide support and resilience, rather than someone untested or without grassroots influence.
