Political temperature has reduced in the country, following Former deputy president Rigathi Gachagua's tour in USA, which left opposition grow cold against President William Ruto's Kenya Kwanza administration.
However, the ex Mathira Member of Parliament was expected to re-energize the opposition, suddenly was thwarted by the government and forced to alter his plans after returning from a tour of the United States.
Many Kenyans had expected the DCP party leader to deliver a fiery speech to his supporters upon returning from America, but his silence upon arrival has shocked many, with his convoy attacked by hired thugs and police deployed to prevent him from reaching Kamukunji grounds, where he was scheduled to address supporters.
Gachagua remained quiet until Friday night when he released a strong statement blaming the government, especially Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen for disrupting his planned homecoming rally.
“The violence was carefully planned. It involved aerial surveillance, hired goons, police officers, and close allies of President Ruto,” Gachagua said.
Street rumors and political chatter suggested Gachagua may have toned down after receiving threats of arrest over remarks he made in America linking top government officials to illegal activities.
Political analysts suggest there are signs of deep divisions within the opposition, and Gachagua’s silence could be a way of testing the political climate before charting a new course.
“There is a strong possibility that Gachagua is positioning himself for major political realignments in preparation for the 2027 elections,” said political analyst Beth Kimani.
Beth Kimani noted that Kenyans are waiting to see whether Gachagua and the opposition indeed have plans to shake up the country’s politics as he claims.
Nevertheless, Gachagua insists he is fully committed to the united opposition, alongside other leaders as announced earlier.
“To those who thrive in sowing confusion, let me be clear, I am a full member of the united opposition. We are about to unveil strategies that will define us,” he declared.
