According to the report from Taifa Leo, President William Ruto, Former prime minister Raila Odinga and former deputy president Rigathi Gachagua, have found themselves at loggerheads over the control of Nairobi county.
The publication has emphasized that the veteran politicians are about face of as the UDA party of Ruto, ODM of Raila and Gachagua's DCP are expected to field their allies to run for Nairobi gubernatorial seat in the 2027 general election.
Furthermore, reports has indicated that President William Ruto, Raila Odinga, and former Mathira Member of Parliament, Rigathi Gachagua have launched spirited campaigns to win over residents of Nairobi, who accounts to over 2.5 million registered voters.
According to Professor Gitile Naituli of Multimedia University of Kenya, he emphasized that Nairobi is more appealing to the three politicians due to this high voter population, and could become a very important battleground for any coalition hoping to clinch the presidency in 2027.
“Nairobi is not just a county; it is a symbol of national power. Whichever side controls Nairobi sends a strong political signal across the country.” said Professor Gitile Naituli
In the 2022 General Election, Johnson Sakaja won the Nairobi governorship on a UDA ticket, defeating Jubilee’s Polycarp Igathe, despite receiving the backing of former president Uhuru Kenyatta and ODM party leader Raila Odinga.
Now, two years ahead of the 2027 elections, the Nairobi gubernatorial race is already heating up and is expected to be among the most hotly contested in the country.
So far Embakasi East MP Babu Owino, Embakasi North MP James Gakuya, former journalist Tony Gachoka, Irungu Nyakera, Dennis Waweru, Agnes Kagure, George Aladwa, and Ferdinand Waititu, have shown interest to run for the seat.
