Maurice Ogeta was one of Raila Odinga’s longest-serving and most trusted bodyguards, a quiet but constant presence beside the veteran politician through decades of turbulence, triumph, and tragedy.
Known for his calm composure and firm vigilance, Ogeta remained by Raila’s side in both public and private moments, symbolising unwavering loyalty in Kenya’s often unpredictable political landscape.
Over the years, he was often seen escorting Raila to rallies, helicopter landings, and high-profile meetings, always a few steps behind, scanning every direction.
The images that span his career tell a story of devotion — from the youthful, sharp-suited guard walking beside Raila during campaign seasons, to the more seasoned protector ensuring his safety during tense political periods.
Ogeta’s loyalty was most severely tested in July 2023, when he was abducted during the anti-government protests led by the Azimio coalition.
He later recounted how he had been blindfolded, held in isolation for days, and interrogated repeatedly about Raila’s movements and protest plans.
His car was vandalised, and his whereabouts were unknown until a court order forced authorities to produce him.
He was eventually freed in the dead of night, left on a roadside in Ruai, shaken but alive. Despite the ordeal, he resumed duty with the same quiet dedication that had defined his career.
When Raila Odinga passed away in 2025, Ogeta was among those closest to him as seen in a viral video of him following Raila closely on what seemed to be his last walk, having stood by the former Prime Minister until his final moments.
His commitment reflected not just professional duty but deep personal loyalty.
In many ways, he embodied the resilience and discipline of those who serve behind the scenes — guardians whose work is rarely celebrated but whose presence makes history possible.
Maurice Ogeta’s name will remain etched in memory as the man who never left Raila’s side.
