Orange Democratic Movement Secretary General Edwin Sifuna has raised serious questions about whether the party is still standing with ordinary Kenyans the same way it used to do in the past.
While speaking during a public conversation, Sifuna said ODM became a strong party in Kenya because it fought for the people and spoke loudly about the struggles facing wananchi.
According to Sifuna, in the past many Kenyans supported the party because they believed it was their true voice. He explained that ODM leaders used to move around the country listening to the problems of the people and then fighting for their rights.
The party was known for standing with citizens when they were facing hard situations like high cost of living, poor services, and lack of opportunities.
However, the Nairobi Senator said he now has serious concerns when he looks at what is happening today. He asked whether the same spirit of fighting for the people can really be seen during the Linda Ground movement activities that are taking place.
According to him, representation means leaders standing firmly with the people and speaking for them without fear.
Sifuna said a political party should always remember why it was formed. He explained that parties are created so that they can defend the interests of the people and make sure the voices of citizens are heard. If a party forgets that purpose, he said, it may slowly lose the trust that people once had in it.
The outspoken senator also said leaders must constantly ask themselves if they are still doing the work that wananchi expect from them.
According to him, leadership is not only about meetings and political discussions. It is also about being present when the people are facing difficult times and showing that their leaders truly care.
Sifuna added that many Kenyans are currently struggling with different challenges. He said life has become expensive and many families are finding it difficult to meet their daily needs. Because of this, he believes political parties must show clear support for the people.
In the end, Sifuna said true representation is seen through actions. He explained that when leaders stand with the people during tough times, that is when citizens feel that their voices are truly being represented.
