Kalonzo described the late judge as a distinguished public servant who served Kenya with honour and integrity. He extended his condolences to Jessica, her children and the wider Mbalu family.
“It is with a heavy heart that I have received the news of the passing of Justice Joseph Mutava Mbalu, husband of our dear sister and colleague, Hon. Jessica Mbalu,” Kalonzo said.
The Wiper leader said the late judge would be remembered for his contribution to the Judiciary, noting that his greatest absence would be felt by his family.
“But it is at home that Mutava will be missed most; as a husband and as a father,” Kalonzo said.
He assured Jessica and her family that the Wiper Patriotic Front and Kenyans would stand with them during the mourning period.
Kalonzo offers message of comfort
Kalonzo also quoted Psalm 34:18 in offering words of comfort to the bereaved family.
“The Lord is close to the brokenhearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit,” he said.
He prayed for strength for Jessica and her children as they come to terms with the loss and concluded by asking for the late judge's soul to rest in eternal peace.
Justice Mutava reportedly fell ill suddenly on Friday night, August 21, after returning home from a burial ceremony. He was taken to Makindu Hospital in Makueni County, where he died while receiving treatment in the early hours of Saturday.
His body was later transferred to Lee Funeral Home in Nairobi as the family began preparations for his burial.
Justice Mutava was appointed to the High Court in 2011 and served at the Milimani Commercial Courts.
His judicial career later ended following proceedings before a tribunal that investigated allegations of misconduct. The Supreme Court upheld the tribunal's recommendation for his removal from office in 2019.
