Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) Party Leader Oburu Oginga has announced that he travelled to the United Kingdom for a medical checkup following advice from his doctors, while assuring party members that the move will not affect the running of the opposition outfit.
Oburu, who is also the Siaya Senator, said his temporary absence provides an opportunity to test the strength of ODM’s internal structures and determine whether the party can continue operating smoothly even when its top leadership is away.
The ODM leader revealed that he had put in place measures to ensure continuity, naming two senior politicians who will take charge of party operations during his stay abroad.
He tasked Homa Bay Governor Gladys Wanga and Mombasa Governor Abdulswamad Nassir with coordinating party activities and ensuring that ODM remains active.
According to Oburu, a political party should not depend on one individual but should have strong institutions capable of handling responsibilities at all times.

His decision to allow other leaders to take charge has been viewed as an attempt to strengthen ODM’s leadership structures ahead of the 2027 General Election.
The announcement comes at a time when ODM is navigating a period of internal changes and political realignments. The party has been under close watch as different leaders position themselves for future political roles and influence within the opposition movement.
Oburu urged ODM supporters to remain united, saying the party’s focus should remain on protecting its values and maintaining a strong presence in Kenyan politics.
The move has sparked debate among political observers, with many watching how Wanga and Nassir will handle the responsibility of steering ODM affairs during Oburu’s absence.
As the Siaya Senator focuses on his medical checkup in the UK, ODM members are expected to rally behind the temporary leadership arrangement and maintain party unity during this period.
