"You Are Beyond This" Police Respond as Senator Samson Cherargei Says Officers Were Transferred After Assault Of Youths in Nandi

Nandi Senator Samson Cherargei has intensified calls for accountability following a police brutality incident that occurred in Nandi Hills on January 10, 2026, where officers allegedly assaulted youths who were playing pool at a local entertainment spot.

The incident, which was captured in witness accounts and widely shared on social media, triggered public outrage and renewed scrutiny of police conduct in the country.

The National Police Service announced that it had taken administrative action against six senior officers linked to the incident.

However, Senator Cherargei dismissed the move as a public relations gimmick, arguing that internal disciplinary measures are insufficient in cases involving serious human rights violations.

He insisted that the officers involved should be arrested, charged in court, and prosecuted like ordinary citizens to send a strong message against police excesses.

Cherargei further urged the Independent Policing Oversight Authority to expedite its investigations, noting that delays often undermine public confidence in accountability mechanisms.

He stated that he is prepared to pursue private prosecutions should state agencies fail to act decisively. In addition, the senator said he would seek compensation for the victims, whom he described as young people whose rights were blatantly violated.

The incident also drew condemnation from Nandi Governor Stephen Sang, who issued a statement on his social media platforms denouncing the actions of the police officers and calling for firm disciplinary and legal action.

According to victims, the officers not only assaulted them but also robbed them of personal belongings during the ordeal.

The National Police Service has publicly condemned the conduct of the officers, describing it as barbaric behavior with no place in a civilized society.

IPOA Chairperson Ahmed Issack Hassan confirmed that the authority is evaluating witness accounts and assessing available evidence as part of its investigations.
