Just hours before a helicopter crash claimed his life in Nandi County, Emurua Dikirr MP Johanna Ngeno was all smiles, sharing what would become his final moments with the public on social media.
The tragic irony of his last Facebook post has left Kenyans in deep mourning after the lawmaker perished alongside five others when their helicopter went down in the Chepkiep area of Mosop Sub-County .
In the haunting post, Ngeno was seen dancing and smiling, appearing in high spirits while attending a function in Endebess earlier that day.
The video captures a man full of life, unaware of the tragedy that would unfold just hours later. Witnesses report that the helicopter had briefly made an emergency landing due to bad weather before taking off again, only to crash and burst into flames shortly after .
The 54-year-old third-term legislator had lived a remarkable life journey from humble beginnings. Born in 1972, Ngeno grew up in poverty, walking up to 50 kilometers daily with 16 donkeys carrying charcoal and maize for sale to support his family .
He rose to earn a BA in International Law from Ukraine, an LLB from Mt. Kenya University, and a Master's from the University of Nairobi before entering politics in 2007 .
Known affectionately as "Ngong," Ngeno was a fierce defender of the Kipsigis community in Narok County.
His courage was perhaps best captured in April 2025 when he was filmed wielding a traditional Maasai rungu while confronting armed police officers during clashes in Angata Barrikoi . "Why are you killing people?" he shouted, earning him the reputation of a grassroots warrior.
Close friend GK Kechwo revealed he missed the fated flight by just five minutes after his boda boda got a puncture . "Maybe there is a reason," the rider told him, words that now echo with painful significance.
Deputy President Kithure Kindiki simply tweeted "devastating" following the news, as investigations into the crash continue .
