A woman from Nakuru County has opened up about the tragic incident that led to the death of her college roommate and ultimately saw her serve a five year jail term.
In an emotional narration shared in an interview reported by Tuko.co.ke, the former student recounted how a disagreement over rent spiraled into a physical confrontation that ended in the loss of her friend’s life.
According to her account, the two were living together in a single rented room while pursuing their college studies in Nakuru. Tension reportedly built up over unpaid rent, leading to a heated argument. What began as a verbal disagreement soon escalated.
She explained that during the altercation, her roommate allegedly moved toward her aggressively. In what she described as an act of self defense, she pushed her. She said she did not believe the push was forceful, noting that her roommate was physically bigger than her.
However, after leaving the room briefly and returning, she found her roommate still lying on the floor and unresponsive. Alarmed, she sought help from neighbors, and the injured woman was rushed to hospital.
Despite receiving medical attention and being placed on oxygen support, the roommate was pronounced dead a few hours later.
Following the incident, the Nakuru woman was arrested and charged with murder. Faced with the seriousness of the charge, she chose to plead guilty in court. The court subsequently sentenced her to five years in prison.
She revealed that forgiveness from the deceased’s family played a role in the outcome of the case. During her time behind bars, she said she struggled with guilt, nightmares, and emotional distress over the tragic events.
As she nears the completion of her five year sentence in March 2026, she says she hopes to rebuild her life and continue with her education. She expressed a desire for a second chance and urged young people to avoid allowing conflicts to escalate into violence.
