We’ll Stop Kalonzo From Assuming Office – ODM’s Robert Alai Draws Battle Line Over KPC Sale

Member of the County Assembly (MCA) Robert Alai, speaking on behalf of Orange Democratic Movement (ODM), has issued a bold warning: he and his party will do everything in their power to block Kalonzo Musyoka from assuming the presidency in 2027.

The declaration comes after Kalonzo — who is set to run under Wiper Patriotic Front (WPF) — pledged that if elected, his administration will reverse the planned privatisation of Kenya Pipeline Company (KPC), denouncing the move by the William Ruto-led government as the sale of a profit-making parastatal.

Kalonzo has repeatedly raised alarm over the proposed sale of KPC, warning that the strategic infrastructure should remain firmly in the hands of the Kenyan people.

He told a rally that “in two years’ time, we will tell you to take your money and get out; we shall restore public ownership.”

Alai, for his part, responded with a statement that underscores deepening divisions within the opposition bloc.

He said: “We shall make sure you (Kalonzo) don’t assume office,” positioning himself not just against President Ruto’s privatisation agenda but also against Kalonzo’s presidential ambitions.

His remarks point to a fracturing of alliances and an increasingly hostile opposition environment.

The KPC sale itself has drawn legal challenge. A recent High Court ruling temporarily halted the privatisation on grounds of inadequate public participation and concern over national security.

The government intends to offer up to 65% of KPC shares.

What makes the situation even more fraught is the fact that Kalonzo’s stance is not just about KPC — it's a broader critique of what he and his party view as the commodification of vital national assets.

Meanwhile, Alai’s aggressive language signals that the contest for 2027 could pit opposition against opposition as much as against the ruling party.
