Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has once again shaken Kenya’s political scene after taking back his earlier apology to former President Uhuru Kenyatta.
Speaking during a recent public event, Gachagua said he no longer feels the need to apologize for what happened during the 2022 elections, insisting that his actions and statements then were justified.
The move comes only months after he had publicly asked for forgiveness from Uhuru, saying the two needed to unite the Mt. Kenya region.
But this week, the outspoken politician changed his tone, saying his apology was “misunderstood and unnecessary.”
According to him, leaders should not be forced to apologize for standing firm in their political beliefs.
Gachagua also confirmed that his impeachment does not stop him from contesting for the presidency in 2027.
He referred to the case of Sirisia MP John Waluke, who managed to retain his seat despite facing legal challenges, saying that justice can still prevail even after political setbacks.
“I have every right to lead this country, and no one should think that an impeachment defines my future,” he said confidently.
He further declared that if given the chance to lead the United Opposition, he would win the 2027 presidential race, positioning himself as a voice for ordinary Kenyans.
Taking a direct swipe at President William Ruto, he accused the government of ignoring the abductions and killings of young people during the Gen Z protests.
He said that instead of offering comfort to the affected families, top officials remained silent.
“Those youths were not funded by any politician. They were simply tired of empty promises,” he said.
Gachagua’s latest statements are seen by political observers as part of his plan to rebuild his image ahead of 2027.
He made it clear that he will not carry anyone politically, saying every candidate in the opposition must prove their worth before the people.
