President William Ruto and ODM leader Raila Odinga’s decision to work together to ensure complete implementation of their personal political agreements has stirred mixed reactions from Kenyans and political analysts.
The duo are pushing for the complete execution of the NADCO Report, a move that has sparked heated debate over their intentions, as well as sidelining opposition camp and other stakeholders in national decision making process.
Political and governance analysts say the two leaders seem to be monopolizing decisions of national importance while excluding other influential political, religious, and social leaders.
“This process is for two people; but Kenya belongs to millions,”
“This process is for two people; but Kenya belongs to millions,” said political commentator Dr. Isaac Gichuki.
However, despite the weight of these agendas, no representative from civil society, religious institutions, or other political parties such as Wiper, KANU, or DAP-K was appointed to the committee.
“Raila and Ruto cannot unite the country by working just the two of them, while others remain spectators. Is this truly a reconciliation process or just a scheme to benefit two politicians?” asked Dr. Gichuki.
He added that despite opposition calls to involve all stakeholders in the appointment of IEBC commissioners as proposed in the NADCO report, the President ignored them.
“If they ignored key stakeholders in forming the IEBC, which is one of NADCO’s recommendations, how can they convince Kenyans that the two of them alone can set the country on the right course?” Gichuki questioned.
Nevertheless, Wiper leader Kalonzo Musyoka, who co-chaired the NADCO committee, now appears sidelined in the implementation of the proposals he helped steer.
Political observer Peter Katana, questioned their decision to exclude other stakeholders from important decisions affecting the country’s future if their goal is truly to unite the nation.
“They seem to be doing the opposite of what they say. If they are implementing the NADCO report in good faith, why are they leaving others out?” asked Peter Katana.
