Mutwe said, “I take 12 painkillers every day” and added, “I am dying. I feel terrible pain.”
He even asked the court to allow his arms to be cut off if that would help him get medical treatment.
Mutwe used to be the bodyguard of Robert Kyagulanyi, a well-known Ugandan politician.
He appeared in court with three other National Unity Platform (NUP) activists: Achileo Kivumbi, Gaddafi Mugumya, and Smart Wakabi. All four face serious charges of robbery.
The court session was very tense. The accused were brought in under heavy security. Their lawyers, who are well-known human rights defenders—Samuel Muyizzi, Benjamin Katana, and George Musisi—asked the court to release the suspects so they can get medical help. They said the men are being kept illegally and have been tortured.
The charges say the men took part in a robbery during a violent event in Masaka District. This happened after the burial of former Kawempe North Member of Parliament Muhammad Ssegirinya on April 24, 2025. The state says the men attacked a civilian and stole a mobile phone and money.
Earlier this month, the Uganda Human Rights Commission (UHRC) said Eddie Mutwe’s detention was unlawful.
They gave an order to free him. But the military refused to obey this order.
Gen. Muhoozi Kainerugaba, the Chief of Defence Forces, called the UHRC’s order “stupid” and said the commission should apologize.
The court will meet again on Wednesday. That day, the judges will listen to arguments about bail and look at medical reports on the health of the accused men.
Outside the court, many supporters of the National Unity Platform gathered to show their support for Mutwe and the others. They want justice and proper medical care for the men.
