The political scene in Uganda was shaken earlier today after reports emerged that former State Minister for Tourism and current NRM Vice Chairperson for Central Region, Godfrey Ssuubi Kiwanda, had survived a terrible road accident along the Mityana road.
According to eyewitnesses and local sources, the accident occurred when Kiwanda’s orange Toyota Hilux was involved in a head-on collision with a salon car. The crash is said to have happened in the early hours of Saturday, May 24, 2025.
Witnesses at the scene described the accident as gruesome, saying the impact between the two vehicles was strong and caused extensive damage to both. "It was like a bomb blast," said one witness.
"The salon car was totally smashed and the Hilux was badly damaged at the front."
Kiwanda, a respected political figure in Uganda, managed to survive the crash. He briefly spoke to Nile Post, confirming that he was alive but being taken to hospital for medical attention.

“It was a deadly crash,” he said, without giving further details about his condition.
Shortly after his confirmation, all his known phone lines went off, causing worry among his supporters and members of the ruling National Resistance Movement (NRM), where he serves as a senior official. His exact medical condition remains unknown at the moment.
Godfrey Kiwanda is no stranger to Ugandan politics. He previously served as Member of Parliament for Mityana North and later as State Minister for Tourism, where he was well-known for promoting domestic tourism through campaigns like “Tulambule”, encouraging Ugandans to explore their country.
He remains a powerful voice in the NRM, particularly in the central region, where he holds the position of Vice Chairperson. News of the accident has therefore shocked many, both within the political space and across the general public.
Emergency responders and police officers arrived quickly at the scene to provide help and start investigations. It is still unclear what caused the accident, but speeding, poor road visibility, or reckless driving could be possible factors. The identity and condition of those in the salon car have not yet been released.
Several NRM leaders and political figures have taken to social media to express their shock and support for Kiwanda. Messages of prayers and quick recovery have continued to flood online platforms, especially from his home district of Mityana.
The Mityana road, where the accident occurred, has in the past been the site of several road crashes. Poor road conditions, over-speeding, and high traffic volumes are often blamed for accidents in the area. This latest crash has once again raised concerns about road safety and the need for better enforcement of traffic laws.
The news has brought attention to the urgent need for safer road travel in Uganda. Citizens are calling on the government and authorities to fix dangerous road sections and enforce road safety rules more strictly.
As the country waits for an official update on Kiwanda’s health, there is a strong sense of relief that he survived. Many describe his survival as a miracle.
